Imagine a day without water

Imagine going a day without a bath, the ability to cook or clean or even an opportunity to drink a cool glass of refreshing water. Water scarcity is a problem that is plaguing the globe and to underscore the importance of protecting and conserving this important resource, the United Nations has designated March 22 as World Water Day. As Roanoke plumbing experts, we at Southern Trust Home Services understand the importance of water in our everyday lives. Here are a few things you can do at home to ensure that you conserve some water – and it will also help you save on your utility bills, too!

  • Turn the tap off. When you are brushing your teeth or shaving, turn the water off until you need to rinse.
  • Regularly check for plumbing leaks. The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 10,000 gallons of water are wasted in American households each year due to unnecessary leaks.
  • Don’t wash your car at home. Commercial car washes use water-efficient nozzles and the dirty water is properly contained and often recycled. When you wash your car at home, the dirty water gets washed into the storm drains and can harm wildlife and destroy sensitive ecosystems.
  • Have regular water heater tune-ups. Keeping your home’s water heater properly maintained helps it perform more efficiently. That way you don’t have to let the water run for long periods of time before the hot water reaches the faucet.
  • Switch to low-flow toilets and showerheads. Low-flow toilets and faucets can reduce water usage by up to 20%.
  • Only wash laundry and dishes when you have a full load. You can save up to 1,000 gallons of water a month by only running these appliances when they’re full. But, you should also be careful not to overload the washing machine. Too many items restricts the water flow, which limits effective cleaning. This can mean you have to rewash items, which wastes more water.

The invention of indoor plumbing is not only a source of great creature comfort, but affords us the opportunity to prevent disease with proper sanitation and use only the water we need to clean, cook and drink.
