Six signs it may be time to replace your furnace

You should fire up your furnace before bitter cold descends on Roanoke. This will help you determine whether it’s good to go for another winter (with a tune-up, of course) or if it’s about to give up the ghost for good.

The Roanoke heating experts at Southern Trust can provide a definitive diagnosis. There are, however, some telltale signs that things aren’t looking so good for your furnace.

  • Age. This is a good standard indicator of how much life is left in your furnace. If it’s 15 years old or more and repairs are adding up, you might want to ahead and invest in a new furnace.
  • Higher energy bills. The older a furnace gets, the less efficiently it operates. This can lead to gradual — or sudden — increases in your energy costs. Add up repair costs and higher electric bills, and the math may point to a new furnace.
  • Uneven heating. If some rooms in your Roanoke home are warmer than others, that’s another sign your furnace is losing efficiency or the ductwork is past its prime.
  • Noises.  Screeching, popping or humming noises suggest a problem with a motor or other part.
  • Dry air. If your house feels chronically stuffy or stale, it could be a sign your furnace is not recycling air properly and may be on the fritz. Other signs of trouble are unusual levels of dust or soot around the registers.
  • Carbon monoxide. Install a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector in your home to warn you if the furnace malfunctions. If it detects dangerous levels of the gas or you or your family begin experiencing headaches and nausea or other symptoms of CO poisoning, you need to open windows and get yourself and your family out of the house immediately.
