Nasal congestion may not be a sign of a cold – it could be poor air quality

If you are suffering with nasal congestion, worsening asthma or allergies, the problem may not lie with your body’s defenses but could be a sign that your home’s air quality is poor.

Many people think that staying indoors will help them avoid air pollution or allergens that can trigger breathing problems, but the issue could be lurking inside your home.

Your Roanoke HVAC specialists at Southern Trust Home Services recommend that you have your home’s air quality tested if you suffer from the following systems:

  • Common cold symptoms: Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) can cause itchy eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, coughing and even dizziness and fatigue. Contaminants such as dust, pollen, bacteria and viruses can trigger these cold-like symptoms.
  • Asthma symptoms: If you or your family members suffer from asthma, poor IAQ can also worsen asthma symptoms. Airborne particles like endotoxins and ozone are the usual suspects in aggravating an onset of an asthma attack.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): COPD is a long-term illness that is highly susceptible to poor IAQ. Some indoor pollutants that can worsen COPD include pollen, pet dander, dust mites, asbestos, radon and secondhand smoke.
  • Cardiovascular Disease: Having difficulty breathing can also have a negative impact on your cardiovascular system since it hinders the movement of your blood vessels and disrupts your heart’s ability to function properly. Dust, soot, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide can increase your risk to cardiovascular disease.

While we all understand how uncomfortable we can get in the heat of summer or the cold of winter if our HVAC unit is not functioning properly, we should also consider how our indoor systems can affect our air quality.

Our experts can perform an IAQ test and then advise you of the results and how you can correct any negative issues.

We offer a variety of air filtration systems, air purifiers, humidification systems and UV air purifiers to help you alleviate some of the symptoms of poor IAQ.
